Strike up a conversation about driving with Desert Mountain Members and they naturally think of their favorite holes on one of our seven distinct golf courses. But to others, driving means something much more personal.
They think back to memories of getting behind the wheel of their first car. Some may have even “turned a wrench or two” and refurbished their rides with pride. Others dream about classic or exotic automobiles. As the miles roll along on the odometer of their lives, they connect the dreams of yesteryear with modern-day opportunities to own a few automotive masterpieces. There are many classic cars in Arizona, and you can find some of them right here at Desert Mountain Club.Desert Mountain Member Dr. Greg Johnson’s collection includes several unique vehicles. The 1934 Talbot Coupe was one of only 70 produced and is unusual in that the Swiss automotive engineer Georges Roesch used to test drive the vehicle in the Alps to see how well it would endure the mountain roads.
Dr. Johnson’s 1953 Jaguar XK120 Supersports Roadster only has 27,000 original miles and won auto show awards for original preservation. While his 1940 Ford ½ Ton Pickup Truck isn’t one of a kind, it has been restored to its original beauty and is definitely hard to replace. The 1933 Ford Cabriolet Roadster Chassis was restored with modern features and built by the “Godfather of the Hot Rod” Barry Lobeck, a midwestern legend.
Member John Yale’s 1955 Chevy Nomad Restomod has been driven less than 100 miles and easily stands out in a crowd with its stunning paint job and one-of-a-kind fabricated power tail light/fuel door. This true work of automotive art is a beautiful example of classic looks paired with modern drivability and 50’s Americana.
Jim Duffey is another Desert Mountain Member auto hobbyist whose impressive collection includes a 1949 Ford F1 Pickup Truck. He’s only the third owner of the vehicle and traded a 1968 Corvette to a close friend for the F1. To honor his friend who passed away a couple years ago, Jim spent 18 months having the truck restored and provided his friend’s widow with a comprehensive photo album of the complete project.
Member Carl Pennington enjoys driving his two 1965 Cobras even more than he likes working on them. The Iconic model and the Jack Roush Special Edition are so much fun to drive, “they paint a grin on your face like no other car!”
These are just a few of the classic cars in Arizona that some of our Members own and love to show off. Of the over 40 Member-ran social clubs at Desert Mountain, one is Cars, Cigars & Cocktails. The purpose is simple: just bring your favorite vehicle, meet new friends, and see all the incredible cars on the Mountain. If that seems like an awesome way to spend an afternoon, talk to our Membership team to learn how you can be a part of the fun.
