For decades, Desert Mountain has earned an exceptional reputation for its spectacular golf courses, breathtaking desert landscapes, and unparalleled Member experiences.

Whether gathering with friends at the Club’s lounges or enjoying an intimate dinner, wine has always been an integral part of the Desert Mountain lifestyle. Now, the Club has taken its passion for fine wine to the next level by introducing its own exclusive collection of signature wines.

The vision for this exciting venture came from Gregg Leonard, Director of Club Operations, who recognized the natural synergy between Desert Mountain’s brand and the enjoyment of a glass of wine. To bring this vision to life, lead sommelier John O’Farrell set out to find the perfect winemaking partner—one that would not only align with the Club’s high standards but also craft wines tailored to Members’ refined palates.

After extensive research, O’Farrell and Leonard chose to collaborate with Matchbook Wines, a distinguished, family-owned winery in Yolo County, California. Located just east of Napa, Matchbook Wines is led by the Giguiere family, fifth-generation farmers who have mastered the art of winemaking through a mix of old-world techniques and innovative practices. Since its founding in 2005, Matchbook Wines has been committed to producing rich, flavorful wines that are well structured, incredibly rich and velvety soft, while highlighting the unique terroir of the Dunnigan Hills region.

Sustainability is at the heart of Matchbook Winery’s philosophy. In 2022, the winery achieved California Sustainable Winegrowing Certification, a prestigious recognition for environmentally responsible and economically viable farming practices. From sheep grazing and cover crops to composting and eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, Matchbook’s commitment to sustainability ensures that each bottle reflects the best of its natural surroundings while maintaining exceptional quality. By improving soil structure and biological activity, their vineyards produce wines with increased flavor, enhanced color and improved balance.

Winemaker Dan Cederquist is the artist behind the various Matchbook wines. His philosophy of creating sumptuous wines with a subtle touch has been instrumental in shaping Matchbook’s distinctive house style. Together with O’Farrell, they worked for many months to create three distinct Desert Mountain offerings:

Chardonnay — Lightly oaked with green pineapple, golden apple, and coconut notes, this wine pairs beautifully with fish, chicken, and creamy pastas.

Red Blend — A smooth, black-fruit-driven wine with juicy richness, perfect for BBQ and slow-cooked meats.

Cabernet Sauvignon – A bold, black and blue fruit-driven wine with soft tannins, ideally suited for steaks and full-flavored dishes.

Each wine was carefully crafted to appeal to Members’ discerning tastes and to complement the Club’s diverse dining experiences.

While some in the industry describe winemaking as a blend of art and science, O’Farrell believes the art component is key.

“Science helps the industry maintain quality levels, but the centuries old tradition of winemaking such as selecting the right vines, knowing when to harvest, and how long to properly age the wine is the true art that is passed down through the generations. Ask the current family maker of a 500-year-old winery what his secret for success is and he will say he makes it like his dad did and his dad before him. Many people can paint but there is only one Picasso!”
