At CARE, our mission is to raise vital funds from our Desert Mountain community, corporate sponsors, and local businesses to support innovative cancer research projects conducted at the Mayo Clinic AZ and HonorHealth Research Institute.
Thanks to your incredible generosity, CARE donated $786,000 this year—directly fueling groundbreaking research aimed at improving cancer treatment and survival outcomes.
Research Initiatives Funded by CARE 2025
HonorHealth Research Institute (HHRI) – CARE’s support is propelling four interrelated cancer research projects with potential to transform cancer treatment:
- Plant-Derived EVs – Natural vesicles derived from plants used to enwrap and deliver drugs directly to cancer cells for targeted therapy.
- Nanoparticle Silicon Implants – Light-activated implants that destroy cancer cells with precision.
- Gas Marble Therapy (VFI Studies) – Innovative use of gas marbles as a potential treatment for cancer, stroke, heart attacks, and diabetic ulcers.
Additionally, CARE is funding expanded research into Uveal Melanoma (UM), a rare eye cancer that often spreads to the liver. This study could unlock key insights into why certain cancers, such as colon cancer, resist immunotherapy after liver metastasis.
Mayo Clinic Arizona – CARE is funding two high-impact projects:
- Pathogenesis of MYC-Overexpressing Acute Leukemia – Aimed at identifying high-risk pediatric leukemia patients and developing cost-effective, life-saving treatments.
- Fast Neoepitope Prioritization and RNA Nanoparticle Dendritic Cell Vaccines for Solid Tumors – A novel immunotherapy approach that trains the body to attack tumors that uses the body’s own immune system to fight tumors. While their initial focus is breast cancer, the technology could extend to other cancer types in the future.
