As interest in private club living continues to grow across North Scottsdale, Desert Mountain remains one of the most sought-after communities in the region.

With seven championship golf courses, expansive wellness offerings, and a culture rooted in connection, the Club offers far more than amenities—it offers a lifestyle.

Inside Desert Mountain Magazine recently sat down with Melanie Halpert, Director of Membership at Desert Mountain Club, to discuss today’s membership landscape, the importance of meaningful community connections, and how health and wellness shape everyday life on the Mountain.

Inside DM: What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone considering membership at Desert Mountain Club?

Melanie: Get pre-approved for membership before—or while—you begin your home search, and ideally purchase a home that already includes a membership. It’s the most seamless way to join the Club. If the home needs updating, we’re fortunate to have many talented contractors and designers who know Desert Mountain well.

Inside DM: What should prospective buyers know about the current membership waitlist?

Melanie: Interest in Desert Mountain membership remains extremely strong. If someone purchases a home without a golf membership, the estimated wait is currently about four to five years. That’s why purchasing a home with an existing membership can be such an advantage.

Inside DM: Some buyers worry that Desert Mountain is a bit far north. What do you say to that?

Melanie: If someone is an avid golfer or values a true club lifestyle, they should absolutely experience Desert Mountain before making that decision. Many people initially question the distance, but quickly realize the drive is minimal compared to the sense of community, lifestyle, and security they gain. And with so many new amenities developing farther north in Scottsdale, we’re actually very well positioned.

Inside DM: Can you explain the Club’s new Renovator Program?

Melanie: It’s a great opportunity for investors and renovators. The program allows them to purchase homes with a Full Golf Membership without needing to carry that membership during the renovation process. Once the home is completed and sold, the buyer can typically obtain the golf membership within three to six months.

Inside DM: What is your philosophy when it comes to welcoming new members?

Melanie: Membership is never just about completing a transaction—it’s about relationships and the right fit. Desert Mountain isn’t simply offering amenities; we’re offering belonging. When prospective members visit, we want them to envision friendships, traditions, and a lifestyle that truly feels like home.

Inside DM: How do those relationships influence membership decisions?

Melanie: People join communities because of how they feel. While our golf courses, dining, and amenities are extraordinary, what truly resonates is when prospective members meet current members and staff. When they feel welcomed and connected, they begin imagining their own story here.

Inside DM: How do you foster those connections during the membership process?

Melanie: We focus on curated experiences rather than traditional tours. If someone loves tennis, we introduce them to active tennis members. If they’re raising a family, we connect them with other families. Even one genuine connection can make a meaningful impact.

Inside DM: Desert Mountain is known for its strong sense of community. How do you maintain that as membership grows?

Melanie: Growth should strengthen the culture, not dilute it. We work closely with Club leadership and members to preserve the welcoming spirit that defines Desert Mountain. A thoughtful onboarding process helps ensure new members immediately feel part of something special.

Wellness as a Way of Life

Inside DM: Many people first associate Desert Mountain with golf. How does health and wellness fit into the Club lifestyle?

Melanie: Wellness here is holistic. It’s about physical fitness, mental clarity, social connection, and living with intention. We’re also proud to be recognized as a Blue Zones Community™, reflecting environments where people tend to live longer, healthier lives.

Inside DM: How does the Club bring that wellness philosophy to life?

Melanie: Members enjoy state-of-the-art fitness facilities, group classes, racquet sports, spa services, and incredible hiking throughout the Sonoran Desert. But what makes it special is the shared experience. Members work out together, join walking groups, and encourage each other—it becomes a natural part of daily life.

Inside DM: What is your favorite part of Desert Mountain Club?

Melanie: I love the variety of experiences available to members. One day it might be a sound bath, the next line dancing, or a moonlight hike. There’s always something new to discover, and it’s wonderful to see members step outside their comfort zones and find new passions.

Inside DM: In one sentence, what does it mean to be part of Desert Mountain Club when it comes to health and wellness?

Melanie: It means living in a community that actively supports your physical vitality, emotional well-being, and social connection every single day.

Inside DM: Finally, what makes Desert Mountain special to you personally?

Melanie: It’s the people. I’ve seen friendships form here that last a lifetime. Families celebrate milestones together, and connections extend far beyond the Club. Helping someone find not just a club, but a true community—that’s the most rewarding part of what I do.
