As the top-rated country club in Scottsdale, Arizona, as rated by Platinum Clubs of America, the legacy behind the courses is one of championship quality, so it’s only natural that the Members who call Desert Mountain home get to take part in their own competitive spirit.
One such tournament that has turned into a yearly tradition happens every year in January. The Rattler is a better-ball tournament consisting of four-player teams, with each team playing two better balls of four gross and net scores. Over 300 Members join this tournament every year for three days of action, and play on three of the top golf courses in Scottsdale, Arizona – Chiricahua, Cochise and Geronimo.
What Members and guests see is the high-level of competition, with some past champions winning by just one stroke. But to put on an event like this, to keep Members coming back for more and to remain as the top-rated country club in Scottsdale year after year requires multiple departments and months of planning.
“It starts with the tournament office researching information on everyone playing the tournament – we have to communicate on our scale, Desert Mountain scale,” Head Golf Professional Brett Meiners said. “You ultimately see the joy from the Members saying they’ve had so much fun, but how do you do it? It’s communication.”
Desert Mountain also holds several other tournaments for Members like The Successor, a championship specifically for two-player teams of a parent and their child, or Mountain Magic for ladies and Mountain Mania for men, two of the largest Member/Guest tournaments held by a private club anywhere in the nation.

“This is a great experience to bring someone to the Mountain and show off what a great event we have, what great clubhouses we have and what a great staff we have,” Tournament Director Sean Ferris said.
